Cream Blush: Finding Your Shade, Application Tips and 7 Product Recommendations

The makeup trends of recent times have been leaning themselves towards lots more natural looks, From one dot foundation to soap brows, the beauty community has truly been embracing "less is more" but the most fun product to come from this is a cream blush. Cream blush is made with the same purpose as a powder blush to add colour to the face, enhance cheeks and create a sunkissed glow. The only difference is that the product takes the form of cream in either a stick, pot or tube. Keep reading this article to see why you should switch to cream blush, how to pick the best shade for you, ways to apply and our favourite products currently on the market.

Why Cream Blush?

1.It's Buildable:

Whether you prefer a full pigmented look or a natural flush, the lightweight formula of a cream blush allows you to have versatility in how you apply it. Starting off with a small dot you can build up the colour of your blush however you desire.

2.The Natural Flush:

When opting for a more natural look, cream blush is able to melt so it looks more skin-like when applied.

3.Great Drugstore Options:

You don't have to splurge to achieve the sunkissed look for a cream blush! There are many affordable cream blushes from brands like Maybelline and Elf (see our product recommendations later in this article)

Picking The Perfect Cream Blush

The two most important things to consider when choosing a cream blush is the colour and the finish. You should pick a shade that compliments your skin tone and will work with the typical lip and eye colours you wear. The finish of the blush should also be considered based on your skin type. Cream blush can come matte, dewy or shimmery so considering how it will look throughout the day on your skin is important.

How Do You Apply Cream Blush?

There are three main ways of applying cream blush: your fingers, a sponge or a brush. Whichever way you choose will affect the end result of the blush as fingers melt the product in whereas a sponge or brush work at a more surface level.

Cream Blush Recommendation

1. Glossier Cloud Paint

Glossier has branded this product as "the most user-friendly blush under the sun" and we can see why. It comes in a range of peach to pink shades at $18 USD. The blush has blurring pigments and is also cruelty-free!

2. Makeup By Mario Soft Pop Blush Stick

This cream blush stick formula comes with a bonus detachable blending brush for super easy application. It promises to "enhance cheeks with a soft pop of colour" and coming from Kim Kardashian's makeup artist himself, that's a promise I'm willing to believe in. Each stick retails for $47 USD.

3. Rare Beauty Stay Vulnerable Melting Blush

The release of the Rare Beauty melting blush completely changed the makeup game with its innovative formula. It is an almost liquid consistency perfect for a truly natural makeup look. The product comes in the cutest compact with a built-in mirror for easy application.

The product comes in some pretty fun shades including the soft violet 'Drama Clas$$' which will certainly set your makeup look apart. The formula is sheer allowing it to be easily built into the perfect pigment. They retail for $33 AUD each.

5. Elf Putty Blush

I've always been a fan of the putty primer so I was very excited when I first heard of the putty blush. You cannot complain about the size or price of this product at $14 AUD for such a large size. The product can be easily applied with a brush, fingers or sponge due to its large pan size and there's a colour for every skin tone.

6. Maybelline Cheek Heat Gel-Cream Blush

Maybelline gave us the perfect Glossier Cloud Paint dupe in this tube of Cheek Heat. For only $15 this unique warming formula helps blend the product into the skin without separation for "the perfect rosy flush".

7. Anastasia Beverly Hills Stick Blush

The newest product on the list is this ABH blush stick which is part of one of the most exciting makeup launches so far in 2021. It's double-sided with a brush for easy application and has a "soft-focus blurring effect" when applied. You can pick up this cream blush for $53 AUD.

Final Cream Blush Tips

- Only pair a cream blush with a liquid foundation as the cream does not blend in well on top of powder

- Use a powder blush over top to set the product and add more pigment

- Don't be afraid to experiment with cream blush as eyeshadow or a lip tint!
